Finding Your North Star

The Carthusian monks have an old saying: "While the world turns, the cross stands still."

As the election results settle in, there are lots of old feelings coming up. In a chaotic and conflicted world, many welcome the return of someone they see as a decisive leader. Others feel less safe in this country because of his presence in office — and because of those his return may embolden.

There's plenty of grief, anger, projection, and uncertainty to go around, and it can be hard to know how to move forward.

In times of confusion, I try to return to my North Star — the guiding light by which I live my life.

Everyone has their own Star — their own point of stillness in the sky by which they navigate. Sometimes, we may lose sight of it. Or we forget it for a time. But it can help guide us amidst the chaos of the external and internal worlds.

While the sky turns, the North Star stands still.

When I do spiritual coaching with people, I often use the metaphor of the North Star to help them find their purpose and calling in life. It's one of the first and most valuable parts of this process.

When our life is pointed toward our Star, we feel energized, awake, alive. Life regains its direction, there's drive in our steps, and purpose in our eyes. When we are aligned with our Star, the impossible becomes possible.

In times like these, our own North Star offers us better guidance than any leader, holy book, or political ideology. It is the calling of our own soul.

For the month of November, I've launched a new scholarship fund to give more people access to the spiritual coaching work I do.

If you feel called to align (or re-align) your life with your own North Star, please apply. Let this be the light by which you live, speak, and act in this world.
