When you fall... go back to basics

Going back to the basics of spirituality

My sister is taking up surfing.

On the first day, she got up on the very first wave. But then, for 30-40 minutes, she kept falling on her face. The instructor took her back to the beach to work on her foundations.

She said it made her realize that this is how she does things: she throws herself out there, gets an early win, and then flounders, because the foundations weren't properly set.

I recognized myself in that.

I have a history of starting things quickly, getting early success easily, and then getting lost. I don't take the time to really learn and establish the foundations before I try to build on them, and it makes for a shaky tower.

So I've been going back to basics: the elemental building-blocks of spirituality.

Albert Einstein said that if you can’t explain something to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.

When it comes to spirituality, I think most people—including me—forgets about the six-year-olds.

We try to rush to deeper waters, more "advanced" topics, higher spiritual insights, without fully understanding the foundations.

When we do that, we forget that the truth is usually simple and clear and speaks for itself — the "simplicity on the other side of complexity."

So I’ve decided to try and challenge my own understanding of spirituality by creating a series of talks called "Foundations of Spirituality."

It will explain basic topics like consciousness, energy, love, ritual, and more in a simple, clear, and practical way. I want six year olds everywhere to understand what spirituality is really about (especially the ones who live inside us).

I'll be presenting the first talk in the series, Enlightenment: The Path of Consciousness, in New Orleans starting this Monday, July 10.

I plan to turn these talks into an accessible online course to serve as the foundation of my work going forward.

Teaching something really forces you to learn it yourself. And already this process has forced me to refine and redefine how I think about and approach spirituality.

I feel the foundations solidifying beneath me. And I'm excited to share it with you.

Warmly,

Daniel
